Talks to resume in LA-Long Beach harbors strike

Clerical workers picket in the rain at entrance to Pier 400 at the Port of Los Angeles Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012. Cargo ships were stacking up at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as a strike by about about 70 clerical workers shut down most of the terminals that together are the nation's busiest port complex. (AP) ? Negotiators for employers and union workers at the Los Angeles and Long Beach harbors will resume talks following a third day of a strike that has shut down most of the terminals at the nation's busiest port complex, both sides confirmed Thursday.

Cargo ships had begun stacking up after seven of eight Los Angeles terminals and three of six Long Beach terminals were shuttered because 70 clerical workers went on strike. They were supported by dockworkers from their union who refused to cross their picket line.

The lead negotiator for the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Employers Association Stephen Berry said he wrote a letter to the union president Thursday afternoon to invite him back to the negotiating table with no preconditions.

International Longshore and Warehouse Union spokesman Craig Merrilees confirmed a meeting would take place later Thursday to discuss the contract dispute clerical workers and 14 shippers have been locked in for 2? years.

By Thursday morning, at least 18 ships docked and inside the adjacent harbors were not being serviced, port spokesmen said.

"Basically, we're not moving cargo in and out here," Los Angeles port spokesman Phillip Sanfield said.

Talks broke off Monday and the workers struck at a single terminal but expanded the picket lines Wednesday, even after an arbitrator ruled the walkout invalid on Tuesday.

Combined, Los Angeles and Long Beach comprise the nation's busiest port complex, handling 40 percent of the nation's import trade.

There was no immediate word on how much the strike is costing the ports. November generally is a slower time for the ports because most holiday goods already have been shipped ashore.

However, there were concerns that a continued widespread strike could prompt retaliation from terminal operators. A bitter 10-day lockout at a number of West Coast ports in 2002 caused an estimated $15 billion in losses.

At issue is the union's contention that terminal operators have outsourced local clerical jobs out of state and overseas ? an allegation that the shippers deny.

Striking clerical worker Trinie Thompson, 41, said Thursday afternoon that her fellow strikers do work at computers ? such as collections, customer service and setting up container movement ? that can be handled from anywhere, and employers were taking advantage of that to use non-union workers overseas.

"We're definitely concerned about the outsourcing of jobs here," said Thompson, who added jobs were being sent to Costa Rica, India and Taiwan. "We need to keep the jobs here in the United States."

The negotiating group for the shippers has denied any local union clerical jobs were outsourced. The shippers, in turn, claim that the union wants contract language to permit "featherbedding" ? the practice of requiring employers to call in temporary employees and hire new permanent employees even when there is no work to perform.

SEO: The Death of Three Syrian Children at the Alzaatari Refugee Camp Due to the Cold: Reality That Calls for Urgent Action by UNHRC and Other Humanitarian Aid Organizations

According to a report by Al-Jazeera news on November 27, 2012, ?Three Syrian children have died in the Syrian refugee camp, Alzaatari near the Jordanian-Syrian border, in the last three days. activists have attributed their death to the cold wave sweeping the camp without heaters.?

SEO notes that while the cold weather does pose an additional burden on already mounting demands, ignoring these warnings, can mount to even more deaths as the harsher winter months approach.

Washington DC (PRWEB) November 29, 2012

According to a report by Al-Jazeera news on November 27, 2012, ?Three Syrian children have died in the Syrian refugee camp, Alzaatari near the Jordanian-Syrian border, in the last three days. Activists have attributed their death to the cold wave sweeping the camp without heaters.?

See: http://www.aljazeera.net/news/pages/9faf071a-e079-4086-97ea-2f7e2ddf8dad#.ULUmMSGEs7g.facebook

This tragic news coincides with several recent reports that highlight increased fears of the severe impacts of the cold winter weather on the refugees and particularly the young children. Many refugees left their homes during the summer months with only the light clothing on their backs. T-shirts and flip-flops are inadequate for warmth during the winter months, as reported by the New York Times.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/25/world/middleeast/winter-threatens-syrian-refugees-as-aid-falls-short.html

Limitation of a proper source of heating, warm clothing and blankets are an alarming reality for the refugees. ?Hundreds of thousands of children who have fled the fighting in Syria are at risk from cold and disease as winter approaches, according to aid agencies. There are fears that scores of vulnerable children could die in the makeshift camps that litter the border regions in countries like Lebanon and Iraq,? Voice of America stated in a report published on Nov 20th, 2012.

http://www.voanews.com/content/winter-poses-deadly-risk-for-syrian-children/1549867.html

?The death of the three Syrian children at Al-Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan is a sign of the international community?s failure to recognize the needs of the Syrian people, whether inside the country or in the refugee camps, and act accordingly." stated Dr Samah Bassas, SEO board member. " It is outrageous and shameful to observe children dying of cold, especially after an already long path of suffering?fleeing their homes and country and living in makeshift shelters,? Dr Bassas said.

SEO acknowledges the great efforts implanted by the international aid organizations to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, however, given the additional burden of winter, SEO stresses the need to adopt more drastic measures to ensure the refugee's safety and survival through this winter.

SEO urges the UNHRC to strengthen their winter supplies of heaters, cooking stoves, warm clothing and blankets to the Syrian refugees in neighboring countries of Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. SEO notes that while the cold weather does pose an additional burden on already mounting demands, ignoring these warnings, can mount to even more deaths as the harsher winter months approach.

World stocks fall as talks over US budget stall

BANGKOK (AP) ? Lack of progress in negotiations for a deal to avoid a U.S. budget crisis before a January deadline sent world stock markets lower on Wednesday.

President Barack Obama and U.S. lawmakers have until Jan. 1 to reach a deal to trim the country's unwieldy deficit. Otherwise, a series of automatic tax increases and sharp spending cuts will take effect that could drag the world's No. 1 economy into recession.

A high-ranking member of the U.S. Senate unnerved investors and sent Wall Street lower on Tuesday after expressing frustration over the budget impasse and the looming "fiscal cliff."

In early European trading, Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.3 percent to 5,784.61. Germany's DAX lost 0.2 percent to 7,316.69. France's CAC-40 fell 0.3 percent to 3,491.57.

Wall Street headed for a lower open, with Dow Jones industrial futures falling 0.1 percent to 12,850. S&P 500 futures were down 0.1 percent at 1,395.40.

Stock market losses began earlier in Asia. Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 1.2 percent to close at 9,308.35, a day after closing at a seven-month high.

South Korea's Kospi shed 0.7 percent to 1,912.78 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.2 percent to 4,447.30. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.6 percent to 21,708.98.

Obama plans to make a public case this week for his strategy for dealing with the issue as he pressures opposing lawmakers to allow tax increases on the wealthy while extending tax cuts for families earning $250,000 or less.

On Wall Street, reports released Tuesday showing increases in U.S. consumer confidence and orders for machinery and equipment failed to boost stocks significantly.

"If one could just take politicians and the fiscal cliff out of the picture, an optimistic outlook would be far easier to cobble together. There's been depressingly little news of cliff breakthroughs, or even developments, of late," said analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore in an email commentary.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.9 percent to 1,973.52, a four-year low. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index tumbled 1.9 percent to 750.97.

Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong, said the steep drop in Shanghai can be attributed to the expiration of lock up periods for some investors, which allows them to sell their shares and creates a glut on the market for the stock.

Otherwise, the drop among Asian stock markets represents profit-taking by investors who've enjoyed substantial gains in the past two months, Yip said.

Among individual stocks, Australian flag carrier Qantas Airways fell 2.2 percent after ending its 40-year partnership with the tourist body Tourism Australia and suspending a $50 million marketing deal. Japan's Toshiba Corp. fell 4.1 percent. Kobe Steel Ltd. plunged 6.5 percent.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was down 12 cents to $87.03 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 56 cents to finish at $87.18 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2932 from $1.2939 on Tuesday in New York. The dollar fell to 81.80 yen from 82.17 yen.

YouTube's automatic captions service adds six additional languages

Building upon the work Google began in 2009, YouTube is now extending its automatic captioning reach to six additional languages. Previously, the transcription service was only available to speakers of English, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, but as of today, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, Russian and Dutch have also been added to the fold. Auto-caps, as the company calls it, works by employing the same voice recognition algorithms used within Google Voice, but as anyone familiar with that speech software can attest, it's not always error-free. So, expect some things to be (unintentionally and somewhat amusingly) lost in translation. Speaking of which, with the site's recent inclusion of the search giant's translation software, users will also have the option take their captioned vids and make them readable across a variety of languages. YouTube: building linguistic bridges across the internet's borders.

New York, New Jersey put $71 billion price tag on Sandy

(Reuters) - New York state and New Jersey need at least $71.3 billion to recover from the devastation wrought by Superstorm Sandy and prevent similar damage from future storms, according to their latest estimates.

The total, which could grow, came as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday the state will need $41.9 billion, including $32.8 billion to repair and restore damaged housing, parks and infrastructure and to cover lost revenue and other expenses. The figure also includes $9.1 billion to mitigate potential damage from future severe weather events, Cuomo said.

Neighboring New Jersey, which saw massive damage to its transit system and coastline, suffered at least $29.4 billion in overall losses, according to a preliminary analysis released by Governor Chris Christie's office Friday. The preliminary cost estimate includes federal aid New Jersey has received so far.

By some measures, Sandy was worse than Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which tore into the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005, Cuomo said.

Sandy destroyed 305,000 houses in New York state - a still provisional number that's likely to grow - compared to the 214,700 destroyed in Louisiana by Katrina and Rita.

Sandy also caused nearly 2.2 million power outages at its peak in the state, compared to 800,000 from Katrina and Rita in Louisiana, and impacted 265,300 businesses compared to 18,700, Cuomo said.

While Sandy may have damaged more homes and businesses, Katrina took a far greater toll on human lives, killing more than 1,800 people directly or indirectly. Sandy, by comparison, is believed to have killed at least 121 people.

"Hurricane Katrina got a lot of notoriety for the way government handled -- or mishandled, depending on your point of view -- the situation," Cuomo said at a press conference.

But considering the dense population of the area Sandy impacted and costs to the economy, housing, and businesses, the damage done "was much larger in Hurricane Sandy than in Hurricane Katrina, and that puts this entire conversation, I believe, in focus," Cuomo said.

Sandy made landfall in New Jersey on October 29. It blasted through the Northeastern U.S., devastating homes, forcing evacuations, crippling power systems and shutting down New York City's subway system for days.

TAKING SANDY COSTS TO CONGRESS

The total cost to the region is still not known as estimates of the damage, as well as future repair and prevention costs, continue to come in from states, cities and counties.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Monday he will ask Congress for $9.8 billion to pay for Sandy costs not covered by insurance or other federal funds.

In a letter to New York's congressional delegation, Bloomberg said public, private and indirect losses to the city from the devastating late-October storm stood at $19 billion.

Of that, private insurance is expected to cover $3.8 billion, with Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursements to cover at least an additional $5.4 billion, Bloomberg said in a statement.

The city still will need the additional $9.8 billion to help pay for costs that FEMA does not cover, like hazard mitigation, long-term housing, shoreline restoration and protection efforts, he said.

Whatever the final tally, officials are beginning to pressure Congress for federal assistance.

Cuomo met on Monday with the state's Congressional delegation and county officials. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said in a statement that New York's Congressional delegation will push hard for additional federal funding.

"The federal government has a clear responsibility to commit all of the necessary resources to help us rebuild," she said.

Getting federal funds could be a tough fight, because of pressure on lawmakers to cut spending and raise taxes in order to shrink the federal deficit.

"This will be an effort that lasts not weeks, but many months, and we will not rest until the federal response meets New York's deep and extensive needs," said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer in a statement.

NUMBERS GAME

Cuomo's earlier estimates had pegged the total amount of damages for the region at $50 billion, with about $33 billion of that incurred in New York state.

In New York City, Bloomberg said on Monday that the city had about $4.8 billion of uninsured private losses, $3.8 billion of insured private losses, and $4.5 billion in losses to city agencies.

Reconstructing the city's damaged roads alone could cost nearly $800 million, Bloomberg said. New York City, a financial and tourism center, also lost about $5.7 billion in gross city product, he said.

Included in Cuomo's nearly $9.1 billion of mitigation costs are what he called "common sense" actions, like flood protection for the World Trade center site, roads, subway tunnels and sewage treatment plants, as well as power generators for the region's fuel supply system and backup power for health care facilities.

"We will see new projects," said Mysore Nagaraja, former president of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Capital Construction Co.

"In order to justify whatever money they finally end up getting, they have to come up with this list of projects that need to be done so that the future Sandy will not have the impact it had this time," he said.

Nagaraja is currently chairman of Spartan Solutions LLC, an infrastructure consulting firm.

Bell, Virgin Mobile Canada reportedly start unlocking iPhones, at a steep cost (update: Telus does too)

Bell, Virgin Mobile Canada to start unlocking iPhones, at a steep cost

Canadians have had the option to buy a factory-unlocked iPhone for awhile, but liberating Apple's handset after the sale has been officially limited to Rogers and Fido customers. As long as MobileSyrup's leak is the real deal, though, subscribers to Bell and its Virgin Mobile branch can spring for an unlock as of today. That's good news for many, although the hurdle is once again the carrier's desire to keep customers from jumping ship. Those pursuing an unlock will supposedly need to be out of contract, skip any prepaid plans and pay a $75 fee -- in short, they're more likely to derestrict an old, well-worn iPhone than the iPhone 5 they bought last week. We'll just be happy to have another route to hardware independence, and hope that the mention of widened unlock eligibility in 2013 is more than just a rumor.

Update: Telus lets you unlock as well, so this mostly completes the big three carriers. Thanks, Tim!

Stocks?retreated after one of their best weeks of the year. Anxiety over the 'fiscal cliff' and European debt drove stocks down.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 42.31 points to 12,967.37. The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined 2.86 to 1,406.29. And the Nasdaq composite index managed a 9.93-point increase to 2,976.78.

Utility?stocks?rose the most, while telecommunications companies fell the most.

The major U.S. economic reports were not due until later in the week, leaving investors to rehash the European debt crisis and talks in Washington over the "cliff" of tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect Jan. 1.

"The themes seem about as recycled as Thanksgiving turkey," David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds, wrote in a note to clients.

He expected a better read on the economy later this week, with reports on consumer confidence on Tuesday and unemployment claims and third-quarter economic growth on Thursday.

Scott Carmack, co-portfolio manager at Leader Capital in Portland, Oregon, said the decline Monday was all but inevitable after last week, when the Dow climbed 3.3 percent because of encouraging signs from Washington and good economic news overseas.

That made Monday a good day to cash out on last week's gains, Carmack said, especially because traders aren't sure how the fiscal cliff will affect the market for the rest of the year.

"Monday is a good day to take profits," Carmack said. "No one was in on Friday, so they're doing it Monday."

The National Retail Federation reported that 247 million shoppers visited stores and shopping websites during the long Thanksgiving weekend, up 9 percent from a year ago. They spent an average of $423, up 6 percent.

Some worry that the momentum won't last, and that deep discounting will hurt stores. Macy's fell $1.87, or 4.5 percent, to $39.86. Saks dropped 29 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $10.23. Target declined $1.71, or 2.6 percent ,to $62.77.

Abercrombie & Fitch was an exception, rising 21 cents to $44.61.

The cliff cast a pall. A government report released Monday warned that a sudden increase in taxes would crimp the spending of middle class families next year, and some analysts wondered whether families would curb spending before the year is over.

The report, by President Barack Obama's National Economic Council and his Council of Economic Advisers, estimated that a married couple earning between $50,000 and $85,000 with two children would see a $2,200 increase in their taxes.

Scanning innovation can reduce radiation exposure and improve personalized medicine

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? New combinations of medical imaging technologies hold promise for improved early disease screening, cancer staging, therapeutic assessment, and other aspects of personalized medicine, according to Ge Wang, director of Virginia Tech's Center for Biomedical Imaging, in a recent paper that appeared in the refereed journal PLoS One.

The integration of multiple major tomographic scanners into a single framework "is a new way of thinking in the biomedical imaging world" and is evolving into a "grand fusion" of many imaging modalities known as "omni-tomography," explained Wang, the lead author of the article.

Wang has a history of "firsts" in the imaging world, including the first paper on spiral multi-slice/cone-beam CT in 1991, on bioluminescence tomography in 2004, and on interior tomography in 2007.

"The holy grail of biomedical imaging is an integrated system capable of producing tomographic, simultaneous, dynamic observations of highly complex biological phenomena in vivo," Wang said.

Currently, dual-modality imaging such as a positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) is "a powerful example of the synergy provided" by using the two as a hybrid technology when assessing concerns in oncology and cardiology, Wang said. "There are no longer any lone PET scanners. Today all are coupled with computed tomography (CT) scanners," added Wang.

For the past decade, Wang and his colleagues have investigated approaches to fusing the various scanning techniques. Recently, they became interested in going beyond the dual-mode imaging, and found that the enabling technology for omni-tomography is "interior tomography" that allows for the integration of multiple major tomographic scanners into one architecture.

He explained that many of the real-world problems in cancer or heart disease are localized or often observed in a relatively small region of interest (ROI) in a human body. In order to obtain a theoretically exact reconstruction of this small area, Wang and others have shown that by using some prior knowledge and common properties on an ROI, they can precisely reconstruct the ROI from data collected with a narrow x-ray beam just covering the ROI.

"We call this novel approach `interior tomography'," Wang added. "In our latest work, we elevated interior tomography from its origin in x-ray CT to a general tomographic imaging principle, and demonstrated its validity for different tomographic modalities including single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), MRI, and phase-contrast tomography," Wang said.

Because interior tomographic imaging can be theoretically exact and practically informative for each of all the major imaging modalities, it becomes feasible to make each scanner "slimmer" or more compact. This compression creates the necessary room to put all of the involved tomographic modalities tightly together in space, and operates them in parallel, achieving space and time synchrony. "It is necessary to depict complicated correlative relationships among diversified physiological features," Wang further explained.

The potential clinical applications for omni-tomography may improve personalized medicine. "As an example enabled by interior tomography, an interior CT-MRI scanner can target the fast-beating heart for registration of functions and structures, delivery of drugs or stem cells, and guidance of complicated procedures such as heart valve replacement," Wang said.

Omni-tomography as a unified technology "also gives leverage to a greatly reduced radiation dose when MRI-aided interior CT reconstruction is implemented," Wang asserted. On the other hand, "it can generate higher-resolution details in MRI images."

The reduction in radiation dosage is a hot topic in the CT field. Medical X-rays, in use for more than 100 years, only accounted for about 10 percent of the total American radiation exposure in the late 1980s. The subsequent growth of the use of various medical x-ray imaging methods now accounts for approximately half of the total radiation exposure of the U.S. population.

"Omni-tomography is a promising direction for biomedical imaging and systems biomedicine," Wang said. Wang's team efforts are related to the Physiome Project, a worldwide undertaking to understand an individual's physiological state from the genome scale to complex organisms in a systematic fashion. This project supports a worldwide repository of models and data sets and is an integral part of systems medicine. "Biomedical imaging is instrumental for the Physiome Project, and especially so could be omni-tomography," Wang added.

This work was funded partially by the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering grant EBO11785 and National Institutes of Health/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute grant HLO98912.

'Zero Dark Thirty' Reviews: Kathryn Bigelow's Osama Bin Laden Movie Praised By Critics

Geronimo. After months of anticipation, Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty," a procedural about the hunt for and killing of Osama Bin Laden, screened for critics and Oscar watchers in New York and Los Angeles on Sunday night. The early words? Strong, thoughtful, cynical, academic and intense.

"It's a crowded Oscar season for great films. But it's a good thing everyone had 'Zero Dark Thirty's' place in line because it is easily one of the year?s most memorable [features]," Oscar blogger Sasha Stone noted. Stone praised star Jessica Chastain for her work in "Zero Dark Thirty"; the 2011 It-Girl and Oscar nominee stars as Maya, a CIA operative who becomes obsessed with finding bin Laden following the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Chastain is on the short list of possible Best Actress nominees, alongside Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Helen Mirren ("Hitchcock"), Keira Knightley ("Anna Karenina"), Emmanuelle Riva ("Amour"), Marion Cotillard ("Rust and Bone") and Naomi Watts ("The Impossible").

"[Chastain] is essentially asked here to carry a movie for the first time, and she rises to the occasion," wrote THR Oscar watcher Scott Feinberg. Both Feinberg and HitFix's In Contention blogger Kris Tapley seemed a bit muted on the film's overall Oscar chances, since the 160-minute film is very dense and talky and contains scenes of extreme torture. On the flip side, GoldDerby.com editor Tom O'Neill wrote that "Zero Dark Thirty" could score nominations in the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay (Mark Boal, who won for "The Hurt Locker") and Best Editing categories, as well as Chastain for Best Actress.

As for how the film succeeds beyond the scope of the Academy Awards, early critical notices have been strong. TIME Magazine's Richard Corliss thought "Zero Dark Thirty" blew the similarly intense "Argo" "out of the water," while THR critic Todd McCarthy wrote that "it could well be the most impressive film Bigelow has made."

"Zero Dark Thirty" opens in limited release on Dec. 19. The film arrives nationwide on Jan. 11, 2013.

LG 'Optimus G2' rumored for May launch with 1080p screen

Android Central

LG's Optimus G isn't even available in some countries yet, but already it seems a successor could be in the works. Reports from Korea's MK Business News suggests that the "Optimus G2" (said to be a provisional name) could be scheduled for launch as early as next May. Key upgrades are said to include a a 5-inch, 1080p display, up from the 4.7-inch 1280x768 panel in the original, and a 2GHz quad-core Qualcomm CPU. LG will reportedly pit the G2 against the successor to Samsung's Galaxy S3.

But here's the kicker -- the article also claims the "Optimus G2" will come with Android "Key Lime Pie" on-board. KLP is the widely-expected name for the next major iteration of Android, presumably either version 4.3 or 5.0. We'd be very (very) surprised to see a fresh version of Android so quickly after 4.2, especially considering the short interval between the two flavors of Jelly Bean.

Nevertheless, as a Nexus partner, LG would have privileged access to code ahead of time, which might help it get devices running newer versions of Android to market more rapidly than other OEMs. Stranger things have happened, but we're still inclined to take this part of the story with a large pinch of salt.

The 5-inch screen size and 1080p resolution looks set to become the new standard for high-end phones in 2013. HTC has already launched the Droid DNA on Verizon in the states, while Sony's next high-end device, "Yuga," is rumored to sport a similar display. Likewise, Samsung is rumored to be hard at work on a 4.99-inch 1080p SuperAMOLED panel.

Whatever form it takes, the Optimus G's successor will find itself among plenty of competition.

Jill Baughman: Steelers Actually Commit 8 Turnovers Against Browns in Borderline Hilarious 20-14 Loss

aeg;klajdav.awlkje,cadm. Oh, my bad, pardon me, that was just me hitting my head against the keyboard with great force multiple times after that ridiculous debacle of a game. The Pittsburgh Steelers committed eight, yes, count 'em, eight (hell yeah I'm counting the one at the end) turnovers while playing the previously 2-8 Cleveland Browns. THE BROWNS. CLEVELAND BROWNS. EIGHT TURNOVERS. WHERE'S THE ALCOHOL.

So the Steelers were starting their third-string, 37-year-old quarterback, Charlie Batch. With Ben Roethlisberger (congrats, new dad!) (okay now hurry back!) out as well as his backup Byron Leftwich, Batch took the helm and the Steelers imploded. It was the second loss to the Browns in their past 18 matchups. I'd keep using capital letters but I'm trying not to frighten you off. I'm actually shocked the Steelers only lost by 6 points -- there were five fumbles by four different backs and one receiver, and three interceptions of Batch. Cleveland scored 17 points off of those turnovers, and the Steelers were lucky that was it.

This is the second straight loss we've had to suffer, with Roethlisberger out for probably the most important stretch in the Steelers season. They're now at 6-5, and the hyped-up game against the Baltimore Ravens next week may not be as important as it could have been had the Steelers won against the Browns. Now of course we're back to "must-win" games week after week, which the Steelers really seem to enjoy putting their fans through toward the end of the season.

Overall, the game was sloppy and borderline stupid. There were a total of 18 penalties. There were multiple chances for a comeback victory, which all ended with turnovers ... or penalties. The fourth turnover by the Steelers led to a Browns touchdown, when rookie running back Trent Richardson ran into the endzone on a 15-yard, rather embarrassing play, with 5:19 left in the third quarter. The second-to-last turnover occurred with 2:25 left when Chris Rainey, who was playing after Rashard Mendenhall, Jonathan Dwyer (who racked up the most yards out of all the RBs ... with a total of 19), and Isaac Redman ALL COMMITTED FUMBLES, was hit after an 11-yard reception and fumbled. After getting the ball back with 20 seconds to go, receiver Emmanuel Sanders committed the eighth turnover when he fumbled after catching a lateral from Mike Wallace. I'd list all the others, but then this post could end up being 1,000 words long. And at that point at the end, the few Steelers fans at the bar were simply laughing instead of cursing and sputtering.

Though Rainey had that huge fumble, he also had a pretty incredible 1-yard touchdown with just one second left in the second quarter. He was stopped and looked to be short of the goal line, but then he bounced off some guys and ran around straight into the endzone. Ah, silver linings.

That was one of the nicest Steelers drives of the game. They went 84 yards on 9 plays, pulling together even after those early fumbles. Batch was able to complete 4 passes, and then Plaxico Burress (yeah, this was pretty much all he did after a much talked-about return to the NFL) drew a pass interference penalty. That set up Rainey for the Steelers' only offensive touchdown. Emmanuel Sanders had a very productive day, with 5 catches for 75 yards. Heath Miller also tried to step up, but Batch couldn't seem to get into rhythm with Mike Wallace or Burress. Wallace needed to step up, and he didn't, seeming to give up multiple times and juggling the ball during a seeming-catch that turned into yet another interception. He didn't catch the ball once during the whole game.

But the game started off pretty well for the Steelers! Lawrence Timmons was able to intercept Brandon Weeden (who completed 17 passes out of 26 attempts for 158 yards, in case you actually cared) and return it for a touchdown, just 2 minutes into the game. It was way too good to be true, though. Mendenhall proceeded to fumble on his second carry, which the Browns turned into 3 points. It really was just the beginning of the end. The Steelers, believe it or not, led this stupid game 14-13 at halftime despite those three fumbles and converting just one third down!! Then again, it is the Browns, which makes this loss hurt that much more.

How the heck can a team win when all four running backs fumble the ball? The answer: You can't. Batch simply didn't make enough big plays, and what can you do when every single running back fumbles the ball? If the Steelers were playing against the Ravens or the Patriots, you bet your ass the score would be totally different from 20-14.

Batch was just 20-of-34 for 199 yards. He came up with some big plays, but those three picks killed any momentum the Steelers may have been building. Two of those picks came in the fourth quarter when all the Steelers needed was a TD to win the game. When the heck is Ben coming back, anyway?

If you want some even better news, on top of our all-star lineup of injured players, including Antonio Brown, Troy Polamalu, and of course Roethlisberger, linebacker LaMarr Woodley injured his ankle in the first half and didn't come back after the half. Rookie right tackle Mike Adams hurt his ankle as well, and he was replaced by Kelvin Beachum (who?). Great.

So, anyway. The Steelers lost to the Browns. I repeat, the Steelers lost to the Browns. Put a nail in the coffin that is this tumultuous season. The only highlight was that the defense was at least ready to play this game, and with another big play, they could have won it for the beleaguered offense. Brett Keisel had a great sack, James Harrison is playing the best he has all season, Ryan Clark seems to be everywhere, and they were able to keep the Steelers in the game. But then again, like I said before, it IS the Browns.

In conclusion: UGH. The whole game, besides the beginning, felt kind of like a surreal, bizarre nightmare. I mean, it's one thing to struggle with your third-string quarterback, it's another to completely fall apart and commit EIGHT turnovers against the BROWNS. The BROWNS. I think it's safe to say that the Steelers won't have much of a postseason run in the next couple of months. It's amazing how a couple of weeks can change the outlook on an entire season -- and having your star quarterback out during three division games. We were all riding high just a couple weeks ago on some close Steelers wins, thinking about dem playoffs. Sigh, it simply wasn't meant to be, it seems. So, Steelers fans, buckle up for a few more horrible weeks (especially next week) and see what happens. Needless to say, my liver has taken a beating these past two games, and I'm anxious to see which Steelers will be playing next week against the Ravens. Kudos to all you Steelers fans for riding out this rough wave, though. There's always next year!

Life Insurance Can Be a Tool for a Happier Marriage

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Great Recession impacted 8.8 million Americans with a loss of jobs. Many of those people affected were married couples who have families, mortgages, dreams, and plans for the future. Rebounding from this crisis is going to take a long time, and married couples can either sink or swim when this kind of financial crisis impacts their lives.

Couples argue more about money than any other topic. They argue far less about sex, in-laws, chores, and their children than they do about money. However, what many happily married couples know is that marriage is more than just a romantic relationship. It is a lifelong partnership that equally embraces business and romance in a net that unites people in trust.

weddingOne of the things that young couples can do to be better prepared for financial crises before they arise is to have some kind of safety net in place. Life insurance is an affordable, easy, and practical safety net for married couples to consider when making contingency plans for the future.

However, the biggest hurdle that married couples might have in broaching the topic of life insurance and money matters in general is the difference in their personalities. It is something of a truism that spenders tend to be attracted to savers. It might be a case of opposites attract, but the result in many people?s relationship with their spouses is a kind of polarization when it comes to money. Especially if money matters are not regularly discussed, money issues tend to drive couples more into their corner.

Our financial personalities are shaped long before we become adults, and the onset of adulthood does not suddenly bring about a mature relationship to money. This polarization is one of the main reasons that married couples tend to argue about money so much. Over-spenders compensate for their anxiety by spending more, and savers take out their frustration on an over-spender as the source of all their own increased frustration and anxiety over money. Even worse, couples can adopt a cone of silence around money issues as a shield for their respective sense of shame and guilt for a perceived inadequacy around money matters. This cone only gets involuntarily broken when a financial crisis erupts.

Marriage is as much a partnership as it is a romance. Couples need to respect and trust one another in order to succeed in life financially. Planning is the key to this success. Scheduling regular meetings to discuss money matters like bills and long term goals can be a great way to begin talking about the return of premium life insurance pros and cons. Couples both have insurable interests with regard to their marriage, and it is never too early to consider life insurance.

Married couples make large purchases like mortgages on homes and cars, and a life insurance policy can provide a beneficiary with money to settle the mortgage or to invest it as they see fit. If only one spouse is working, life insurance gives the other spouse some financial security to pay for bills, costs of living, and funeral costs while they search for employment. Any attempt to bring up a discussion of life insurance with a spouse should focus on its practicality, but since money is an emotionally and symbolically loaded topic, it should be discussed with mutual respect and love.

Buying life insurance can have the added benefit of strengthening a relationship. There is a great deal of happiness and freedom that comes from having financial security. Not having a nest egg in the future to guard against accident or death can leave a pall on the relationship. Depression is common in people having financial difficulties, and depression in either spouse can have a negative effect on the abilities of spouses to communicate openly and honestly with one another.

Depression can also exacerbate problems people have when dealing with money, making them more likely to make impulse buys. Purchasing life insurance gives couples a milestone to celebrate in the context of their relationships. Besides wedding anniversaries, there are not many socially identifiable financial markers for long term marriage goals. Creating one?s own financial milestone through a life insurance policy can be empowering to a couple, and it provides a place where couples can agree on the value of money and financial security, thus mitigating the conflicts that couples can have with their money personalities. Savers, for instance, have the benefit of knowing that they are setting aside money for a future rainy day, and spenders know that should a crisis occur they will be able to take care of all their costs.

When handled through a financial expert, life insurance is easy to purchase, and with term life insurance policies, it is cheaper than universal or whole life. The important thing about life insurance is that it gives married couples a clear sense of their worth to each other, and it provides a great safety net that can be paid into over many years and used to meet the sometimes unpredictable realities that life throws at us. Marriage takes a lot of work and is built on mutual respect for the freedom that couples should have to be themselves. Life insurance can make that financial work a little easier and a little less burdensome.

Have You Defined Goals for Your Mobile Web Development Program?

When your enterprise is traveling the right path to tap the potential of mobile phones, to extend reach with the aid of a mobile website, it has just taken the first best step. When done right, mobile web development can reap big rewards. Before spending money and time on the mobile website development program, an organization has to adopt the right strategy to gain immensely from the program.

It is imperative that your organization defines goals, prior to embarking on this project. While your organization goes through the planning phase, it has to offer its focal attention on three important categories to answer relevant queries that can take you closer to the overall objectives of the project. What are the three main components that help you define goals for the mobile web development project?

Business

In the first place, business goals ought to be defined before the program is rolled out. Your enterprise should define organizational goals and justify if mobile presence is going to provide thrust to your organization in its efforts to achieve business objectives. Apart from accomplishing business objectives by making diligent use of mobile sites, organizations should also know if the mobile site would act as a vehicle to extend business reach.

Needless to say, an organization gains mileage out of the mobile site when the medium brings in new business opportunities. More importantly, the company that wants to make the most of the mobile site should know if this medium is the ideal option to set up a strong platform and introduce innovative measures, to bring customers under the organization?s fold.

User

As an important category, users deserve complete attention as when an enterprise defines goals for this project. From the end user?s perspective, an enterprise should know how the target audience will get benefited from the mobile site built by the company. Moreover, your organization should also consider the tasks that get accomplished through the mobile website before coming up with the ideal plan.

Other factors that take shape in form of interaction with the mobile content, frequency of use, among other relevant factors ought to be considered from a user?s perspective to define goals for the project.

Technology

It is also important to consider technology and resource opportunities when a company is devising a plan to roll out this project. Before defining goals, an organization should also devote its focal attention on the constraints that can dampen the program, in order to devise strategies that can thwart such constraints.

Before rolling out robust mobile website development program, your enterprise should define overall goals to achieve success out of this campaign.

Congressman-elect writing Elizabeth Smart's memoir

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Ten years after her kidnapping, Elizabeth Smart is preparing her story of being held captive by a homeless street preacher, her improbable rescue after nine months, and how she advocated for children after the ordeal.

St. Martin's Press bought the rights to the memoir from the now 25-year-old senior at Brigham Young University. Smart married a fellow Mormon missionary, Matthew Gilmour, in February.

The account is being written by Chris Stewart, a congressman-elect from Utah who has authored books with religious and patriotic themes.

Stewart said Friday that Smart has made a surprising recovery from the brutal experience at the hands of her captor.

"She has taken a professional outlook on this and is able to talk in an impressive way about these things frankly," Stewart told The Associated Press. He said parts of her book would receive "appropriate" but not "salacious" treatment.

"She's not shying away from this story," he said.

Smart has said she waited for the March 2011 sentencing of Brian David Mitchell before collaborating on the telling of her story, which has been in the works for nearly a year.

Mitchell, a onetime itinerant street preacher, was convicted of Smart's kidnapping and sexual assault. He is serving two life sentences at a federal prison in Arizona.

Authorities say he snatched the then-14-year-old Smart from her bedroom at knifepoint on June 5, 2002.

The book won't just be the story of Smart's captivity but also will depict how she organized the Elizabeth Smart Foundation and brought more attention and law enforcement techniques to the cases of missing and abused children, said her publicist Christopher Thomas.

"She started the foundation to get her message across, and book was another way to do it," Thomas said.

It will be the fourth book about the kidnapping that caused a national sensation.

The first was "Held Captive," a quick treatment published months after police captured Smart walking along a busy suburban Salt Lake City street with Mitchell and his wife Wanda Barzee, who is serving a 15-year sentence.

Then came her parents' bestseller, "Bringing Elizabeth Home: A Journey of Faith and Hope."

A more revealing account was "Plain Sight: The Startling Truth Behind the Elizabeth Smart Investigation," by news photographer Tom Smart ? the girl's uncle ? and Lee Benson, a columnist for the Deseret News of Salt Lake City.

Their book chronicled the police and FBI investigation that initially ignored the eyewitness account of Elizabeth Smart's 9-year-old sister, who was able to identify the abductor as a handyman who had worked at the family's home.

The book also delved into Mitchell's disturbing religious beliefs.

"We never talked to Elizabeth about our book," Tom Smart said. "We did not want to tell her story. We want her to tell her story."
