Add some flavor to your hot chocolate for a new twist on this heart-warming drink!
With winter well underway, many of you have probably already broken out the hot chocolate. Hot chocolate is a staple of winter in our house and for good reason. You can add a little warmth to your day in one simple drink. Unfortunately, regular old hot chocolate can get boring. So why not add a little spice and pizzazz? Here are my top 10 favorite ways to add some life to a boring cup of hot chocolate.
Peppermint
The holidays may be over, but that doesn?t mean peppermint has to go out of style. Add a peppermint stick to the drink for instant minty-fresh goodness. If you don?t have peppermint sticks on hand you can always use peppermint candies. Just drop a candy into the bottom of the cup.
Coffee
If you have a craving for hot chocolate, but need a little energy boost, add a splash of coffee to your drink. Try pouring in a shot of espresso or a few tablespoons of regular coffee to the hot chocolate to give it a different twist.
Caramel
Caramel is the perfect addition to your hot chocolate. Add a tablespoon of caramel flavoring or place a caramel candy in the bottom of your cup.
Cherries
Cherries are a perfect match for chocolate. If you are a fan of chocolate covered cherries, you don?t want to miss out on some cherry hot chocolate. Add a few maraschino cherries to your cup for some zing. If you want a more distinct cherry flavor add a little bit of the cherry juice to the cup as well.
Peanut Butter
Do you love peanut butter cups? If so, this is a match made in heaven. Add a tablespoon of peanut butter to your hot chocolate and let it melt. You will have a peanut buttery and creamy drink in a few minutes.
Peppers and Spice
If you like a little spicy heat in your dishes, add a little to your hot chocolate. I love the hot chili pepper chocolate bars, so this is one of my favorites. Simply add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and a pinch or two of chili pepper to the hot chocolate and you have a spicy new creation.
Cookies and Cream
Kid will love this one. Crush some Oreo cookies and add them to the hot chocolate. Then sprinkle a few of the crushed Oreo cookies on the top of the whipped cream.
Chambord
Add a little raspberry to your drink by adding a teaspoon or two of Chambord.
Maple Syrup
Maple syrup goes well on pancakes and waffles, but it also is fantastic in hot chocolate. Add a squirt of maple syrup to your hot chocolate for a little different taste.
Moms (and Dads) Only
Mix together 2 ounces of Kahlua, 1 ounce of vodka, and 1 cup hot chocolate made with milk for an adults-only hot chocolate delight.
These are just a few of the many ways you can add a little pizzazz to your hot chocolate. What is your favorite hot chocolate flavor enhancer?
